The first issue of Brandon Graham’s King City came out this week and I just got my copy today. I haven’t read it yet (at least, not this version) but the book looks fantastic. The oversized aspect of it (it’s the same size as Image’s Viking) helps give it a different feel. The size and the art make it feel like an old-fashioned, honest to goodness alternative comic that should have been published 20-30 years ago. I can easily pass on Viking until it finally comes out collected but had to add King City to my standing DCBS order because it just looks wack. (I really can’t pull off street, can I?)
On the back cover, Graham has a one page strip up about how he works and this panel just slayed me. “Don’t you die! Get on your feet soldier!” is a great motivating speech after he says that “- if I see you cry, I’ll knife you myself.” If King City has that kind of humor in it, I can’t wait to get lost in Graham’s cartooning.
