One of the sad facts about the end of 100 Bullets is that Dave Johnson won’t have that book to create stunning covers for. His covers, the closest things in comics to well-designed movie posters, defined the feel of that book as much as Eduardo Risso’s interior artwork did. In October, 2009, Johnson is providing the cover to Deadpool #900. Now, I don’t think I’ve ever knowingly bought a Deadpool comic since New Mutants #98 but if the rest of the book looked 1/5th as good as the cover does, I’d drop $4.99 on this book.
I don’t know whether I love the classic Bond riff on the cover, with the action happening in the silhouette of a curvaceous woman or the humor of Deadpool facing beret-wearing mimes, pointing their fingers as if they had guns. The mime with two guns… I mean two pointed fingers just cracks me up.
This cover is a great blending of humor and design. With the flat white space and the strong green silhouette the image jumps out from the usually-too-busy mass of comic book covers. This cover does what any good cover should do– it makes me want to grab the book off the shelf and flip through it. Now if only Dave Johnson was drawing the inside of Deadpool #900.
