What looks good in July?

By Scott Cederlund in Previews, comics

Looking through Previews and DCBS, here’s some stuff that jumped out for July:

mmv23cooke_lrgMODERN MASTERS SC VOL 23 DARWYN COOKE
RICHARD STARKS PARKER THE HUNTER HC

It’s going to be a Darwyn Cooke month in July with his Hunter book and a Modern Masters devoted to him.  I was a bit disappointed with last year’s Comics Journal interview with Cooke so I’m hoping that this Modern Masters lives up to the excellent standards of the whole series.  And The Hunter looks like it’s going to be a visual feast.  I’ve never read these books but I hope that Cooke has the opportunity to create a fantastic story.

NOIR TP VOL 01

And if Cooke’s Hunter wasn’t enough crime for you, Dark Horse has a new anthology out highlighting crime and noir books.  A new short Criminal story was enough to get me interested in this book but it looks like it has plenty of other great writers and artists working on it.

WEDNESDAY COMICS #1 (OF 12)
WEDNESDAY COMICS #2 (OF 12)
WEDNESDAY COMICS #3 (OF 12)
WEDNESDAY COMICS #4 (OF 12)

The recent announcement that Jose Luis Garcia Lopez doing art in this series has 100% sold me on this book.  All of the artwork that has been shown looks excellent and let’s be honest, all of Mark Chiarello’s books have been well worth the price of admission.  There’s nothign to say that this won’t continue that line.

BLACKEST NIGHT TALES OF THE CORPS #1 (OF 3)
BLACKEST NIGHT TALES OF THE CORPS #2 (OF 3)
BLACKEST NIGHT TALES OF THE CORPS #3 (OF 3)

I’ve also added the Blackest Night at my LCS.  I think Blackest Night is going to be my main superhero fix for the summer and fall.  All I’m really looking for in this book is action and more action.  If Geoff Johns can fit in a good story, it’s just gravy.

NGE SHINJI IKARI RAISING PROJECT TP VOL 02
SLAM DUNK GN VOL 05
NAOKI URASAWA 20TH CENTURY BOYS GN VOL 04

The manga books for the month.  The more I read about Shinji Ikari Raising Project, the more I’m kind of wondering about it and how it’s different than NGE Angelic Days.  I love the bi-monthly schedule for 20th Century Boys and Pluto and am digging gettinng new Urasawa every month.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN PREM HC VOL 02 WORLDS MOST WANTED
MOUSE GUARD HC VOL 02 WINTER 1152
AGENTS OF ATLAS PREM HC DARK REIGN
NEW AVENGERS PREM HC POWER VOL 10

The collections of the month.  I plan on dropping the issues of Mouse Guard after this series and getting only the collections as that’s the way I’m reading them.  I’m not sold on Invincible Iron Man yet.  I liked Fraction’s first storyline that was separate from what was happening in other books but this storyline is too much Dark Reign.  And the main reason I’m getting New Avengers is to complete the collection and spend some time until Stuart Immonen gets on the book.
