June might as well take all of my money now.

By Scott Cederlund in Previews, comics

… and actually it will since I’m preordering and prepaying for all of this stuff.

You’d think that there was a major convention or something in June that would have all the companies trying to have big releases out that month.  This is actually one of my biggest DCBS orders in some time and I still think I should be cutting it down a bit more before the end of this month.

  • Special Forces TP– Can’t wait to finally read Kyle Baker’s war stories.  I’ve always been a big fan of Baker and I’ve heard good things about this.  And even if it isn’t all that good, I’ll always have The Cowboy Wally Show to fall back on and reread.
  • I Kill Giants TP– According to Image, everyone on Earth should own this book (see the visual press release below.)  I haven’t read it but I’ve heard enough excellent things about this book that I want it now.
  • Pixu: Mark of Evil TP– If anything gets cut this month, it’ll be this.  Not because it isn’t excellent (it is) but because I already have the Pixu mini comics.  Becky Cloonan, Vasilos Lalos, Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon’s different art styles all work together in this book to show different aspects of one fateful house.
  • Nobody HC– Jeff Lemire’s tale of the Invisible Man is easily one of the books I’m looking forward to the most this year.  From his sculpted art style to his slightly-depressing-but-in-an-uplifting-way writing, He’s easily become one of my favorite cartoonists of the last couple of years.  With the Essex County books done, I’m excited to see where he goes as a creator from here.
  • Beanworld V2 Gift Comes HC– Sometime, I need to take a day and just immerse myself in Beanworld again.  It’s been far too long since I’ve read Larry Marder’s meditations on the life, the universe and everything.
  • Green Lantern Rage of the Red Lanterns HC– O.k. So I’m looking forward to Blackest Night and other than the whole vomiting blood thing, the rainbow lantern corps have been kind of cool.  This book features some great artwork by the under-appreciated MikeMcKone and finally does something with Hal Jordan after the extended and slightly unnecessary  Secret Origins arc
  • Freakangels V2 TP– I’ve really got to reread volume 1 again.  I read most of it online but I haven’t read the trade yet.  I think this may be the closest thing that Ellis has done to producing his own manga series.  Paul Duffield’s artwork is just gorgeous on this book.
  • Wonton Soup GN V2– Wow, this book kind of came out of nowhere.  I actually just found my copy of James Stokoe’s first volume of this space trucking/cooking book and was wondering whatever happened to the title or the creator.  Glad to see more of this coming out.
  • Low Moon–It’s the Norwegian artist Jason.  That’s really all I need to know.
  • Asterios Polyp– David Mazzuchelli’s return to comics!!!  I’ve never really read much of his stuff beyond Batman: Year One so it’ll be interesting to see what 20+ years have done to his style which, from what I understand, changed dramatically even with Rubber Blanket.
  • Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys V3– This gets so good right about here.
  • Slam Dunk V4– I’ve got a whole pile of Takehiko Inoue manga piled up that I need to get though.
  • Green Lantern Corps Sins of the Star Sapphire TP– Artist Patrick Gleason doesn’t get enough love for how he’s defined the look and feel of the Corps in this book.

I don’t think I’ll be around for Free Comic Book Day this year so I’m actually ordering a couple of book from DCBS instead.  It’s not too bad though because I’m not that crazy about too many of the books being offered this year.

FCBD:

  • Cars–For Jakob but I’m looking forward to reading Boom Studio’s Disney books.  I’m hoping that they’re going to be excellent.
  • Green Lantern Blackest Night– What was I saying about looking forward to this event?
  • Avengers– I would totally give up on the Avengers if it wasn’t for the artists that Bendis is getting to work with.  I really like what Deodato’s doing on Dark Avengers and Stuart Immonen’s coming on New Avengers in the next couple of months.  This book has Jim Cheung who, while slow, really needs to find a good project since I don’t think he’ll ever get back to The Young Avengers.
  • DC Kids Mega Sampler– I really need to give some of the DC kids stuff a better try.  I’m one of those fuddy duddies who didn’t really care for Tiny Titans #1 but maybe I was just in a bad mood that week.
  • Love and Rockets– From Tiny Titans to Love and Rockets.  This is why I love comics!

And here’s Image’s great press release for I Kill Giants and why everyone on Earth needs to own a copy of this book:

PRESS RELEASE – EVERYONE ON EARTH MUST OWN I KILL GIANTS THIS  MAY!
Image Comics releases the trade paperback everyone who breathes oxygen needs to buy this May: Joe Kelly and JM Ken Niimura’s I KILL GIANTS!

19 February 2009 (Berkeley, CA) – This May, Image Comics releases Joe Kelly and JM Ken Niimura’s complete I KILL GIANTS trade paperback while declaring everyone on the planet Earth should buy it since it’s so damn good.

I‘m really flattered Image would make that kind of claim, so much so Ken and I are humbled beyond words and hope people like it as much as Image thinks they will,” Kelly said. “Ken certainly did a phenomenal job with the art and I like to think it’s pretty good as a whole. Then again, there’s a lot of people on Earth. Maybe only half the population should buy the collection and recommend it to friends if they think it’ll appeal to them. That’s still a lot of people. At least three billion.”

I KILL GIANTS tells the heart-wrenching story of Barbara Thorson, a girl whose own family can’t tell if she’s insane or actually the giant slayer she claims to be. During its seven issue run, fans were won over by Joe Kelly’s impeccable storytelling and JM Ken Niimura’s charming visuals, creating what the publisher believes will be one of the shining stars in its strong line of perennial collections for several centuries to come.

Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson said, “While Image prides itself on its entire line of comic books, graphic novels and trade paperbacks, we feel I KILL GIANTS is a title all six billion people on Earth will enjoy, whether they’re already comics fans or not. I‘m personally buying six copies to hand out to various friends and family members – and I get them for free!”

I KILL GIANTS (MAR092427), a 184-page black and white tradepaperback for $15.99, will be in stores May 13th, 2009.
