Weekly Comic Shopping List 1-28-09

By Scott Cederlund in comics

Final Crisis is finally over and with that, I think the majority of my regular Marvel and DC purchases do as well.  Coming out of the last two events, I just don’t have it in my to follow this stuff on a monthly basis anymore.  There’s stuff I’ll wait for to be collected (Dark & New Avengers) and stuff that I’m saying bye-bye to (JSA.)  I can only now think of one or two Marvel or DC books that I buy on a regular basis and even those are close to getting chopped.   The last couple of issues of Guardians of the Galaxy just don’t live up to the first couple of issues and War of Kings already has me so bored that I may drop it before the first issue even comes out.

  • Umbrella Academy Dallas #3 (lcs)– After a fairly standard first issue, the second issue of Umbrella Academy Dallas delivered some of the craziness that I think people have been waiting for Grant Morrison to deliver again.  I guess we’re lucky to have Way and Ba around to fill in the Morrison-sized void.
  • Star Wars Vector Vol 1 Chapters 1 & 2 TP (future purchase)–While Legacy is the only Star Wars comic I’m reading now, I want to see what Vector was.
  • Final Crisis #7 (lcs)– “Worlds will live, worlds will die but the DC Universe will never be the same again.”  That tagline had much more umph to it than “The Day Evil Won,” doesn’t it?
  • Final Crisis Revelations #5 (lcs)–  Revelations has featured Rucka’s usually solid scripting but the plot has been kind lackluster and unmemorable.  At least it’s over now.
  • Justice Society Of America Vol 3 #23 (Faces Of Evil Tie-In) (lcs)– Honestly, the stupid end of Thy Kingdom Come killed my interest in this title.  I may end up just putting this one back on the shelf and waiting for the eventual collection to finish up Johns’s run.
  • Showcase Presents House Of Mystery Vol 3 TP (future purchase)–
  • Dead Ahead #2 (dcbs)– I sadly wasn’t that impressed with the first issue.  I’m hoping this issue sparks up some Alex Nino love.
  • Heathentown GN (dcbs)– It’s rate that I get a book solely based off of a preview nowadays but Heathentown’s artwork jumped out at me.
  • Criminal Vol 4 Bad Night TP (dcbs)– Brubaker and Phillips.  That’s all that needs to be said nowadays.
  • Glamourpuss #5 Regular Cover (lcs)–  I’m still sticking around for Dave Sim’s art lesson/parody magazine and enjoying it.  I wonder what old school cartoonist Sim is going to teach us about this time?
