I’ve got a huge order from DCBS coming sometime this week. If nothing else, I’ll have plenty of reading to see me through the New Year but I’m noticing something weird about what I’m getting. I’m working on my “Best Comics of 2008″ list right now and it should be up in the next few days but there’s a rather distinct lack of Marvel or DC books on that list. Out of 15 books, there’s only two DC books (1 DC proper and 1 Vertigo) and one Marvel book from their Icon line. The other 12 books are from everyone from Image to Top Shelf to Vertical.
The relative diversity of my list isn’t a huge surprise but look at the list of books I’m getting from DCBS this week:
- Heroes V2 hardcover (this one already has buyer’s remorse written all over it)
- Invincible Iron Man V1
- JSA V3
- Green Lantern Secret Origin
- Godland V4
- Wasteland V4
- Tezuka’s Black Jack V2
- Astonishing X-Men V2 HC
- Captain America: The Death of Captain America V3 HC
- Beanworld Holiday Special
- Hulk 100 Project
- Guardians of the Galaxy V1
That’s 12 books and 7 of them are Marvel or DC. Add to that the fact that I’m buying more Marvel right now in collected form (the Amazing Spider-Man collections are great fun stories) but none of them are up there as my “Best of 2008″ books?
I’ve mentioned it before but I’ve got to seriously look at my buying habits for 2009. It’s not that I’m not enjoying any of these book but I’m getting more and more to the point of having to ask why am I buying what I buy.
That said, there’ll be a lot of good reading when I’m gone for the holidays.
