Wow, what a big Thanksgiving week list of books here. But also what a range. After last week’s little diatribe of my lack of enthusiasm about Marvel and DC, I like teh great mixture of some of the better superhero books (Captain American, JSA and Green Lantern Corps) with some quirky superhero stuff (Umbrella Academy and Guardians of the Galaxy) combined with a healthy dose of indie books (Mouse Guard, Glamourpuss and Wasteland.) It’s weeks like this that emind me why I love the comic medium even if I’m not always happy with the product that’s put on shelves.
- Umbrella Academy Dallas #1 (lcs)– Already? It’s been a while since the conclusion of the last mini but this followup feels like it’s sprung up quickly.
- Justice Society Of America Kingdom Come Special The Kingdom #1 (lcs)– The first two Specials have been a mixed bag of stuff, barely rising above curiosities of style and substance. I have a bit more hope for this special since it’s actually written by JSA scribe Geoff Johns. Hopefully it’s more than a fill-in issue like the previous two specials have been.
- Green Lantern Corps Ring Quest TP (future purchase)– I’ve been enjoying the Green Lantern stuff since Rebirth and Patrick Gleason’s artwork on this title has been outstanding.
- Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 #7 (lcs)– Simply the most fun book that Marvel is putting out right now.
- Captain America Death Of Captain America Vol 3 Man Who Bought America HC (dcbs)– Just looked at my DCBS shipping list and this one isn’t on it. Guess I’ll have to wait another 2 or 3 weeks to see the end of this story.
- Glamourpuss #4 Regular Cover (lcs)– For me at least, this is still a fascinating book, mixing documentary and farce together to produce an schizophrenic reading experience.
- Mouse Guard Winter 1152 #4 (lcs)– Wish I could remember what was going on here.
- Wasteland (Oni Press) #22 (lcs)– I was caught up with this series but now I’ll have 3 issues to read. I should just switch to the trades but this is one of those books that I really want to support on a monthly basis. It’s one of the few books that I haven’t really felt guilty about double dipping on.
- Tiger Tiger Tiger GN (dcbs)– The 2nd Scott Morse book this month!
- American Elf Vol 3 Sketchbook Diaries Of James Kochalka GN (future purchase)– Kind of kicking myself that I didn’t order this already. Kochalka’s daily comic journal is funny, lively and touching as he quickly boils a moment of his day down to (usually) a four panel cartoon.
- Mesmo Delivery Service (dcbs)– The minicomic 5 introduced me to Rafael Grampa and I’ve been waiting to see his work on a larger scale.
- Comics Journal #294 (dcbs)– I’m still reading the S. Clay Wilson interview even if it is kind of sad to read it now after the news of the last week or so. Looking forward to hearing from Jason, one of my favorite cartoonists right now.
