Weekly Comic Shopping List 8/11/08

By Scott Cederlund in Previews, comics

  • Final Crisis Revelations #1 — Yes, I’m a sucker and am diving in completely into the Final Crisis crossover books.  How did I think I could pass up Greg Rucka writing Renee Montoya and Crispus Allen again even if the two characters are a long way gone from their Gotham Central days?
  • Welcome To Hoxford #1 — I always want to buy Ben Templesmith books but rarely end up doing it.  His Wormwood books are on my “need to buy” list but I’ve never picked them up for some reason and I end up getting my Templesmith fix in the occasional issue of Fell.  I have no idea what this one is about but I’ll flip through it at the shop.
  • Captain Britain And MI 13 #4 — After being completely won over with the first issue, the 2nd and 3rd issues have already felt standard and rote.  Whatever novelty there was in Paul Cornell’s writing on issue #1 has been lost in the whole Secret Invasion crossover that has already become tiring.  I wish Marvel had the confidence in this kind of series to launch it outside of a big event.  (Note:  since writing this, I’ve emailed my shop and told them to drop it off my pull list.  Is it now wrong to hope that this book gets quickly canceled so Leonard Kirk can get yanked from this and draw the ongoing Agents of Atlas?)
  • Secret Invasion #5 — How many issues is this thing again?  This is the start of the second half, right?  I’m enjoying the art on this book and think that, like House of M, it may read better when the whole thing is out.  At least, that’s my hope right now.
  • Secret Invasion Thor #1 — Matt Fraction appears to have discovered his inner thunder god since he’s doing almost as much Thor writing as JMS right now.
  • Zorro Vol 6 #6 –I haven’t read all the issues of this yet but #5 was surprisingly easy to follow without reading the previous couple of issues.
  • Black Diamond Get In The Car And Go TP–Here’s my review from earlier this year on the seven issue mini.  I’m looking forward to rereading this book again and seeing if it still stands up. I may try to have a few more words on this when all is said and done.
  • Amazing Remarkable Monsieur Leotard TP– For all of my love of Eddie Campbell, I have a hard time reading any of his non-Alec work.  I just don’t find his non-self obsessive work as interesting as his loose autobio stuff.  That doesn’t mean I won’t be getting this book.
  • Modern Masters Vol 17 Lee Weeks SC– If this is coming out this week, how did I get the somewhat disappointing V18 a couple of weeks ago?  This still continues to be one of my favorite series but the strengths of the individual volumes depend on the strenghts and storytelling abilities of the subject.  After a string of strong volumes, the John Romita Jr one contained some nice art but his career has been so Marvel-centric that there wasn’t a lot of meat in the interview part of the book.  I’m waiting to see what this book is like.  I like Weeks’s art but really don’t know much about the man himself.
  • Frank Frazetta’s Dracula Meets the Wolfman– a last minute addition to the shopping list thanks to an online preview.  Two books with Francesco Francavilla artwork this week?  I hope I don’t forget this one when I stop off at the comic shop on Wednesday.  I’ve never been a big Steve Niles fan but the art and the concept of this one looks too fun to pass up.
