  • Ambush Bug Year None #1 — Can Giffen and Fleming recapture the magic from the 80’s and some early 90’s?  I’m hoping that they’ve lost none of the wit and irreverence that they had during the Bug’s hayday.
  • Elephantmen #13– I just read the War Toys trade paperback and it puts the Elephantmen in a different light- showing them as the weapons they were created to be instead of the used and abused soldiers we see in the current series.
  • Liberty Comics A CBLDF Benefit Book One Shot — It’s for the CBLDF so that should be enough but the lineup on this book looks fantastic.  This is a pretty good week for anthologies
  • American Flagg Definitive Collection Vol 1 HC — I’m telling myself that I won’t get this.  I’ve already got the original issues and the 3 First Comics graphic novels but I’m a sucker for these type of collections (see Scout V2 later this post) and this is one of my favorite comic stories of all time even if I still don’t get everything that’s going on. books that I fear people will read now 20 years later and say “so what?”  I don’t think I want to live in a world where people don’t understand American Flagg.
  • Comic Book Tattoo SC– Anthology #2 of the week featuring stories themed around Tori Amos songs and I’m always looking to support a good anthology.  And the talent lined up in this one looks very strong.
  • Madman Atomic Comics Vol 1 TP–  Includes the fantastic issue #3 of the new series and the “what-the” issue #6 where I’m still not sure why Allred did what he did.
  • New Avengers #43 (Secret Invasion Tie-In)– The art on New Avengers and Mighty Avengers right now is enough to get me to drop both titles once Secret Invasion is over.  And I’m already tired of the storytelling style that Bendis is doing, putting the puzzle together one painstackingly precise piece at a time.
  • Uncanny X-Men #500 — With the Brubaker/Fraction team moving over here, I thought I’d be more excited about this book but it’s still just another X book.  I’ve got #500 on order and will get it sometime next week but I’ll probably just wait for the trades for this book.
  • Glamourpuss #2– More musing on photorealist artwork, beautiful women and that unique brand of Dave Sim humor that I’m never sure whether it’s winking or condescending.
  • Black Summer #7– Finally.  Strong start led into a good but not outstanding middle but lets see if Ellis can pull it all together for a slam-bang end.  Juan Jose Ryp’s artwork has really grown on me.
  • Wasteland (Oni Press) #19– You know how I get to this point and usually say that I have all the issues but haven’t read it in a while?  Well, guess what– I’ve read the whole series.  The Mad Max/spaghetti western approach has me rivetted from now on.  Johnston and Mitten are a great pair.
  • Scout Vol 2 TP–  You know what I said about American Flagg?  Well, the same thing goes here.  If you got the first volume, Truman’s artwork really progresses here as the story settles into its own grove more.  It’s post-apocalyptic fiction, without the apocalypse but with its own blues soundtrack.
  • Apocalipstix Vol 1 GN– I ordered this when it was originally solicited but that order was cancelled and I never re-ordered it.  If its at the comic shop tomorrow, I’ll probably pick it up.
  • Modern Masters Vol 18 John Romita Jr SC– Have I said before how much I love this series?  I’m guessing that this will be a lot of Marvel artwork, focusing on Spider-Man but I hope to see a good selection from Romita Jr’s second X-Men run.
  • Flight Volume 5– Anthology #3.
