Weekly Comic Shopping List 6/25/08

By Scott Cederlund in Previews, comics

I find it curious to see that in a week where Marvel is dumping 34 books on the market (see here and here,) I’m only getting three Marvel books, compared to the four from DC, 1 from Dark Horse, 1 from Image and 1 from Oni. Just because there are a lot of books doesn’t mean that they’re all going to be good. It’s worth noting that this is the second time I can remember this week that Marvel’s been accused of dumping titles onto the direct market and I believe it’s also the end of their fiscal quarter. The last time this happened, Marvel said they were trying to get books out so the numbers would help bolster the quarter.

But I don’t know if you can judge by my tastes because I’m really looking forward to the All Star Batman and Robin hardcover.

Also, I ordered a number of issues of Write Now and Draw from TwoMorrows as part of their $2 sale and they should be coming today or tomorrow. These mags will get added to my vacation reading list.

  • Umbrella Academy Apocalypse Suite TP– The comic shop had this last weekend but I’ve ordered it online so it should show up this week. This quirky team book is what I think we would have gotten back in the 90s if Grant Morrison had taken over the Teen Titans instead of Doom Patrol.
  • Final Crisis #2 Cover B Story Silver Cover– I may just be an easy mark for Grant Morrison but I really dug the first issue and can’t wait to see where this is going. If you’re not happy with this as a huge DC crossover, look at it at either another part of Seven Soldiers or even a new JLA story.
  • Green Lantern Vol 4 #32– The last issue made me a believer in the Secret Origin arc.
  • Madame Xanadu #1 Incentive Matt Wagner Variant Cover– Listening to a couple of Matt Wagner interviews today, I’m more excited about this than I was before.
  • All Star Batman And Robin The Boy Wonder Vol 1 HC– If DC was really brave, they’d put internet reviews up as their back cover pull quotes: “This book sucks— Fanboy616″ or “What happened to Frank Miller?- BoyWonder1995.” Personally, I’d love them to use my line “What bet did Jim Lee lose?”
  • Vix #1– Don’t know much about this one other than Rantz Hosely wrote it. I’ve been waiting to check out one of Rantz’s books.
  • Immortal Iron Fist #16– For all intents and purposes, the last issue for me. I’ll miss the title but it’s an easy one to cut with the two writers leaving. I don’t even know if I’ll be adding their X-Men to the list to make up for this.
  • Mighty Avengers #15 (Secret Invasion Tie-In)– I just hope that Hank Pym doesn’t go out like a chump. Is that too much to ask?
  • New Avengers #42 (Secret Invasion Tie-In)– From the preview art, Jim Cheung is doing his best John Cassaday impersonation.
  • Wasteland (Oni Press) #18– Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’ll get around to reading these. Maybe they’ll be vacation reading finally.
  • Chiggers TP– Hope Larson’s books are always full of charm and a whimsy fantasy.
  • Dororo Vol 2 TP– I’ve still got to pick up Tezuka’s first volume as well as the remaining volumes of Buddha and Phoenix.
  • Cat Eyed Boy Vol 2 GN– From everything I’ve heard, this book is seriously messed up. I’ll have to try it sometime.
