Where did all the good comics go?

By Scott Cederlund in comics

I’ve noticed a weird thing over the last few weeks. Other than what I plan on getting on a weekly basis, I’m pretty much oblivious to everything else that came out in a particular week. Ultimate Origin came out yesterday? I guess Jonah Hex came out yesterday but I don’t remember seeing it and it was a book I knew I wanted to look through. Heck, I can’t even remember the name of Mark Millar’s Icon series and I guess the third issue was released yesterday. I flipped through Trinity because that was a fairly big book yesterday but in the end, I just didn’t feel it.

It wasn’t that long ago that even if I wasn’t interested in a book that I was still familiar enough with shipping lists and schedules that I’d probably at least flip through a book at the shop. But for some reason that’s slipping away right now, to the point where I’m having trouble getting excited for books that I’m buying let along feigning some interest in the books that may or may not be any good.

While there’s some monthly books that I’m still interested in or even building interest in, a lot of the books don’t have the same pull anymore. I don’t know if it’s an economic thing, a been-there/done-that thing, or simply a matter that there’s too much stuff on the stands and no matter what anyone tries to tell you, it is too much and most of it just isn’t that good. We’re not in a “golden age.” We’re in a age where the good stuff is very good but too much stuff is just mediocre and amateurish (Avengers/Invaders, I’m looking at you.)

Note:  It occurred to me that after I wrote this, I really need to do a followup on what comics don’t fall into the mediocre & amateurish category, books that I highly recommend.  I’ll try to have that up sometime today.

  1. [...] There are times when Scott Cederlund from Wednesday’s Haul and I don’t see eye to eye on things.  He thinks I am too pessimistic or I think he is too pessimistic.  However, there are times when he takes the thoughts I am thinking and puts them into blog posts. [...]
