Weekly Comic Shopping List May 29, 2008

By Scott Cederlund in Previews, comics

Yeah, this could be a big week.

  • Hellboy Vol 8 Darkness Calls TP– I’ve got the individual issues but I’m really looking forward to getting this and finally reading the whole thing. Probably like most people, I was hesitant about a Hellboy book not drawn by Mignola but Duncan Fegredo was an excellent choice to fill in on the art. He managed to blend the shadowy moodiness of Mignola while keeping his own unique scratchy style at the same time. I really like how Hellboy has become a mood and atmosphere piece ever since he broke away from the BPRD.
  • All Star Superman #11– With all the shipping delays that this book encountered, it’s hard to believe that it’s almost done as the penultimate issue ships this week. I don’t know if it hangs together as the strongest continuing narrative that Morrison has done but almost each individual issue has been among the best, showcasing Morrison’s creativity and the strength and charm of the concepts that revolve around Superman.
  • Final Crisis #1 – As if there wasn’t enough Morrison already this weekend, Final Crisis is here. I can only hope that this one captures my imagination more than Marvel’s Secret Invasion is. The artwork from JG Jones has looked nice and it seems like it’s going to be building off of concepts from Seven Soldiers. I’m intrigued so far.
  • Green Lantern Vol 4 #31– I’m still reading but this series has lost a lot of momentum and excitement after Sinestro Corps.
  • Legion Of Super-Heroes Vol 5 #42– I want to like this book. I want to like this book. I want to like this book. It’s not doing much to get me excited about it month in and month out but it’s also not doing anything that makes me really want to drop it. It’s just kind of skirting along, below the radar.
  • Starman Omnibus Vol 1 HC– If you haven’t read Starman (and I’m kind of surprised by how many people haven’t,) try to check these out. James Robinson told a fantastic story about growing up and about family within the pages of this book. I’m still on the fence about whether to get this or not. I’ve got the trades but ultimately those are incomplete and this Omnibus series is supposed to collect everything tied into Robinson’s Opal city. I have the feeling I’m going to break down for this series. I wonder what Amazon or Instock Trades will have it for. Or maybe I’ll just hold out for Wizard World Chicago next month.
  • Nearly Complete Essential Hembeck Archives Omnibus TP– I don’t have this one ordered but it’s Hembeck. It’s another book that I’ll probably pick up somewhere along the line.
  • True Story Swear To God Archives Vol 1 TP– I’ve wanted to try this series for a while and a nice, affordable Archive series seems like the perfect place to start.
  • Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men #1 Regular John Cassaday Cover– Finally, it’s over. I think we all have an idea of who lives and who dies but it will be good to finally see the story. Read altogether, Whedon’s run is a lot better than I thought it originally was.
  • Immortal Iron Fist #15– You know, other than Orson Randall’s story, I haven’t gotten into the couple of past Iron Fist stories that they’ve done in this series so far.
  • Immortal Iron Fist Vol 2 Seven Capital Cities Of Heaven HC– While I think that the Brubaker/Fraction team could have been set for a long running classic storyline here, in the end they should have a strong tale about the Iron Fist and the battle of champions.
  • Judenhass GN– Dave Sim’s Holocaust graphic novel. I got to flip through a preview copy of this last month and the artwork looked fantastic but do I really want to read this book?
  • Skyscrapers Of The Midwest HC–I’ve heard a lot of good things about this title. May have to pick it up.

note: the image is not the cover to the True Story Archive but it’s an image off of Tom Beland’s website that I just like.
