Was anyone else as disappointed in the Newsarama and CBR coverage of NYCC as I was? Both sites tried to run mini-sites to cover the con but it only felt like it was doubling the amount of webpages I had to check to try and find any news or coverage of panels. If they were trying to drive their click-through rate, they succeeded. If they were trying to make it easier to find all of the NYCC news, they both failed miserably. From my comfy chair, there looked to be almost next to no news outside of what’s supposed to be now the 2nd biggest con. Maybe that’s still due to Marvel and DC having some kind of weird exclusive contracts with Wizard that forces them to hold off on the “big” news until the summer. But I’m not even seeing anything much from the 2nd, 3rd or 4th tier companies other than Grant Morrison writing webisodes or something for Virgin comics. For some reason, I can’t get too excited about that.

  • Checkmate Vol 2 #25– I’m sorry to see this book go. No, it’s not being canceled or anything but with Greg Rucka leaving, I think I am too. Too many comics, not enough dollars to enjoy them all and it’s unfortunately 3rd string titles like this that are left to suffer. I’ve greatly enjoyed this series but honestly the only reason I’ve been reading it is mostly for Greg Rucka. I don’t feel any great love for any of the characters or situations but I’ve liked how Rucka has played the espionage card in a shared universe. With him leaving, I feel no sense of ongoing loyalty to the title or to the characters. So, with that in mind, did Rucka do his job? After 25 issues, should I care more about these characters than I do? (I think I’ve just hit on my podcast topic for this week!)
  • Justice Society Of America Vol 2 Thy Kingdom Come Part 1 HC– “Volume 2, Part 1.” That’ll keep the eventual cataloging of this series easy. JSA is another of my one-the-bubble series. I still like it but I haven’t enjoyed it as much as I did before Infinite Crisis and I know I’ll get the eventual collection so why do I keep getting the monthly series? Johns was loosing me a bit with the whole All Star Squadron approach he’s taking with the title but I liked the last issue a lot more than other people did. But this is one of those books I wonder if it really needs me? Does it need by $2.99 a month the same way other books do? Or can DC, Geoff Johns and Alex Ross wait until 6 months down the line when I’ll hand over my (discounted) money for a nice collection from DCBS? I think I know the answer but I just have to pull the trigger.
  • Avengers Invaders Sketchbook - FREE– When the heck is this supposed to ship? It feels like a long time ago that I ordered the first issue and I’ve been waiting.
  • Mighty Avengers #12 (Secret Invasion Tie-In)– I decided that for the duration of Secret Invasion, I’m going to pick up both regular Avenger books. I read the final couple of pre-Secret Invasion issues and they weren’t that impressive. I hope that the title was just killing time until this crossover began.
  • X-Men First Class Vol 2 #11– O.k. This is one of those titles that I don’t get but need to pick up in some form or another. Everyone I know who likes this book actually loves Jeff Parker’s take on the X-Men. I love his Agents of Atlas and his Marvel Adventures Avengers (even if I think that the latter is quite a mouthful to say) and he’s a writer that I should be all over and buying all of his stuff and making him a millionaire but I’m not. I’m a failure as a comic blogger and I feel like I’ve personally let Parker, Marvel and Joe Quesada down. And for that, I’ll be bringing on the bad guys with this issue. And maybe the trade if I can find it.

Sorry about that. Well, where was I again?

  • Daredevil Hell To Pay Vol 2 TP– I stopped reading these monthlies somewhere during this run of the title. I read the Bendis run only as trades and I think I’ll get to enjoy Brubaker’s Daredevil more if I’m not in the monthly garbage and grime that is Matt Murdock’s life. Twice a year sounds like a good way (and possibly saner way) to enjoy Hell’s Kitchen.
  • Education Of Hopey Glass HC– Hasn’t this been on my list before?
  • Ganges Vol 2 TP– and this one too? Either way, both of these titles have been sitting in a box for me out at DCBS in Muncie, Indiana waiting to be shipped. And I’ve been sitting at this computer in Bartlett, IL waiting to be shipped them.
  • Complete Peanuts Vol 9 1967-1968 HC– I’ve been getting the annual slipcases of these with two volumes in them. I need to read them over the summer. Maybe I’ll read some of them to my son. I remember being a kid and begging my parents to get me the old paperback reprints. These larger archives are some of the nicest looking books on my shelves.
  • Complete Terry And The Pirates Vol 3 1939-1940 HC– Volume 3 already? Crap, I still have to get the 2nd one. Anyone at IDW want to help a brother out here? I’ll give you nice reviews?
  • Modern Masters Vol 16 Mike Allred SC– Twomorrow’s Modern Masters are some of the best modern comic art retrospectives around. They contain nice career-spanning interviews and have a fantastic knack for picking out the right art pieces to really show off their subjects abilities. I’ve loved almost every one of these books and figure that I’ll love this one as well.
