I’m sorry but Lizard Jimmy Olsen vs. Darksied? And Countdown still isn’t over with? At least taxes are reliable.
- Grendel Behold The Devil #6– I have no idea where Wagner’s going with this series but I’m enjoying the ride.
- Brave And The Bold Vol 3 #12– Hopefully Waid wraps up the story he’s been building since issue #1. I’ve been enjoying this series but don’t think I’d call it a success. The individual issues haven’t hung together with the patch-work storytelling that Waid has used here, never mind the old-fashioned Silver Ageish approach to this series. This book was designed for a specific reader.
- Showcase Presents Legion Of Super-Heroes Vol 2 TP– I don’t have this one on order but may breakdown and buy it at the shop on Wednesday. While I’ve picked up some of these old Adventure Comics out of the back issue boxes, it was cheap, inexpensive reprints that gave me my education in early Legion of Super-Heroes back in the DC Digest books of the early eighties. These Showcase books are just the natural extension of those.
- Amazing Spider-Man Vol 2 #557– I picked the first two issues of the Wells/Bachalo run last week. The story is fun but a bit unforgettable, Spidey dealing with some kind of cult in the middle of a blizzard. Fun but disposable. It’s cheap entertainment with some pretty good Bachalo artwork. I’ve always thought that Bachalo was one of those artists you needed to “learn” to read but his artwork is remarkably easy and clear here. For those of you who are still pissed because of Steampunks, take a look at the clarity and ease of his artwork on ASM.
- Captain Marvel Vol 5 #5 — I’m giving this issue for Brian Reed to convince me he’s a good writer. The best I can give him so far is inconsistent.
- Damned Prodigal Sons #1– Nice to see this series back for a second run. The first was a fun mix of mobster and monsters and this series should be the same. Great writing and great artwork.
- Naoki Urasawas Monster Vol 14 TP– The hackneyed and sentimental ending of V12 has put me off of reading V13 so far. The second half of volume 12 felt cliched and forced, the first time that I started to see some validation of the criticism that Monster is too long. It was pure padding that knocked me out of the story but I need to catch up with the volumes. I’ve said it before but can we possible see 20th Century Boys before the end of the year.
