Weekly Shopping List 4-9-08

By Scott Cederlund in Previews, comics

Brian Hibbs calls this a teeny-tiny week over on Savage Critics. Honestly, if I bought everything I was at least mildly interested in, this would probably be my biggest haul of the past 4-6 months.

  • Justice Society Of America Vol 3 #14 — Somehow it’s hitting me right now that the few DCU books I’m enjoying right are all written by Geoff Johns.
  • Titans Vol 2 #1– Oh, if only it wasn’t Judd Winick and Ian Churchill doing this? Then I’d be much more interested in this book. As it is, Winck is one of the worst sensational writers around so I have no hope for this book.
  • Suburban Glamour #4–The fourth issue already? I’ve got some catching up to do on this title.
  • Aqua Leung Vol 1 GN–I didn’t order this book but after reading a review or two of it, I think I made a mistake. I wasn’t a huge fan of The Amazing Joy Buzzers so I think that’s what put me off on ordering this one. I kind of hope that the LCS has this one or I’ll probably be ordering it online.
  • Fantastic Four Vol 3 #556– I think I prefer Mark Millar when he’s reigned in by the corporate structure (Wolverine, Superman Red Son) than when he’s allowed to go off on his own (Kick-Ass, Wanted, Unfunnies.) FF has been a nice followup to his and Hitch’s Ultimate work. I’ve really enjoyed the first two issues of their run and I think I may end up following this monthly for their whole story.
  • Soleil Sampler – FREE– Good luck Marvel. I think you’re going to need it trying to push European comics on an American market.
  • Criminal 2 #2– The first issue of V2 was a near perfect short story, a perfect blend of words and art. Brubaker and Phillips are doing some exceptional work on this title that… well, it doesn’t transcend the comics medium but shows what it could be.
  • Wolverine Death Of Wolverine HC– Howard Chaykin artwork in a nice hardcover collection. This collects a great issue written by Jason Aaron and a longer story by Marc Guggenheim. From what I understand, the Guggenheim story reworks a lot of Wolverine’s healing capabilities. But I’m much more interested in this for Chaykin’s artwork. I think it’s been better lately than a lot of people have. It’s only Chaykin’s writing that suffered from his long hiatus from comics and you’ll note that he hasn’t done a lot of writing since returning.
  • Terry Moores Echo #2– Another book that I want to check out but I wasn’t that impressed with the first issue. It felt like Ellis-lite, taking science fiction plot devices and trying to put them into a “current” setting. It looked nice but the story was king of blah.
  • George RR Martins Wild Cards Hard Call #1 Regular Eric Battle Cover– I was a big fan of the first 6 or so novels but lost track of it when it started to jump around to different publishers. In fact, I think I saw a new Wild Cards novel on the shelves of the bookstore last month. This isn’t the first time Wild Cards has tried to make the transition from novels to comics. I’m hoping that this one will be a solid story, reminding me why I liked those original novels.
  • Wasteland (Oni Press) #16– Every month I keep telling myself that I need to reread this series from the beginning and every month I don’t. Sooner or later, I will.
  • Cosmic Guard TP– Jim Starlin trying to keep his cosmic-chops active. I liked the Kid Kosmos followup graphic novel so I’ll probably give this one a shot sooner or later.
  • Other Side Of The Mirror Vol 2 GN– Did you know that Jo Chen drew manga? I still haven’t read the first volume so I’m going to hold off on this one until I know whether I like the story or not.
  • Ganges #2— Kevin Huizenga. What’s not to like?
  • EDUCATION OF HOPEY GLASS HC– I haven’t read any of these stories so this is going to be one of the first things I read out of my next DCBS shipment.
