Weekly Shopping List 4/2/08

By Scott Cederlund in comics
  • Batman Grendel TP New Printing– The original Batman/Grendel mini is the only book that I remember taking with me on my honeymoon. I remember seeing original artwork for this at, well, it must have been at the 89 or 90 Chicago Comic Con (well before Wizard) but it wouldn’t be for a number of years after that this series featuring two beloved characters and one beloved creator would come out. Heck, in 1993, I don’t even think I believed it was coming out except that the first issue shipped the week I got married. Two great events in one week! And I don’t think the second mini is nearly as bad as a lot of people did when it was coming out. Yes, it’s different but it’s still good.
  • Action Comics #863 Regular Superman And The Legion Of Super-Heroes Cover– Going into this, I have the feeling that there won’t be a definite conclusion to this series but more of a “to be continued” ending and I’m actually all right with that as long as the next artist is George Perez.
  • Casanova #13–This is probably my favorite monthly read right now and after the last issue, I can’t wait to see what madness Fraction throws out this time. You could cancel all of Fraction’s Marvel work and I probably wouldn’t care but you better not touch Casanova.
  • Secret Invasion #1 Regular Gabrielle Dell Otto Cover– I’ll be talking a bit more about it on the next podcast but in some ways, it’s events like this that are maintaining my interest in Marvel or DC right now. I’ve collected their books for way too long now and nothing that happens in the regular books have any zing or zest for me right now. These events (Secret Invasion and Final Crisis) with their promises of “nothing will ever be the same” (even though we all know that’s baloney) are creating an artificial sense of excitement in my aging fanboy heart.
  • Zorro Vol 6 #2 Matt Wagner Cover– I didn’t love the first issue as much as I hoped I would have. I’m really tired of origin stories and can’t stand that this is the only way to begin new series. I would have loved to dive right into an adventure and had an origin develop over time.
  • Comic Foundry Magazine Vol 1 #2 Spring 2008– Honestly I don’t think this or the other new magazine Comics Now is for me. I’m not the audience for either magazine so far. One’s too mainstream (and I have my own definition of mainstream that I hope to right about this week) and the other is too… trendy? Is that the right way to describe Comic Foundry? Both look to be well done but I don’t know what they’re offering me.
