I was hoping that this was going to be one of those internet hoaxes but CBR and Mark Evanier are confirming that Rocketeer creator and artist Dave Stevens died yesterday after battling leukemia.
Rocketeer is one of the shining moments of 80′s comics– a fantastic blend of pulp adventure, good girl artwork and a sense of pure fun. Evanier’s write up goes into how Stevens developed and eventually lost interest in the character which is a true shame. At least he got to tell his stories eventually but I would have loved to see more Rocketeer or even just general comic work from Stevens.
