Weekly Comic Shopping List 1/30/08

By Scott Cederlund in Previews, comics

A decent week but I’m looking more forward to getting my DCBS shipment and the stuff that’s in there. Oh, and I just ordered a couple of books from Amazon. Finally got one of the Project X manga books and went with the Datsun 240Z. It’s one of my favorite cars of all time and I’m looking forward to getting that book. Also, thanks to a Howard Chaykin kick I’ve been on, I ordered the two volumes of the recent Blade series.

  • Action Comics #861 Regular Gary Frank Cover– Is this the fourth or fifth part? I think Action Comics is representative to me right now of most of Marvel and DC’s mainstream output; I’m just not getting into it as much as I usually do or want to. I’m having trouble lately figuring out why this isn’t connecting.
  • Green Lantern Vol 4 #27– For the last 6 months, this has been the best mainstream title DC was putting out. I’m hoping that Geoff Johns can maintain the momentum this title developed during the Sinestro Corp and be stronger coming out of the war than it was going in.
  • Y The Last Man #60– I can’t read Brian K. Vaughan on a monthly basis. His writing just doesn’t work for me on that level for some reason but I need to read this issue, even if I’m behind a few volumes on the trade. A few months ago, I read either 6 or 7 volumes of the trade and the book was a grand adventure with strong characterization. As Yorich’s story draws to a close, it’s just reminding me that I’ve got to get the remaining trades.
  • Outsiders Checkmate Checkout TP– A decent crossover of these two teams. It didn’t do that much from a Checkmate point of view but it told a pretty good story.
  • Madman Atomic Comics #6– Is it just me or is Michael Allred’s art more open and expressive since he came back to Madman? There’s been a change to the art and the coloring of the book that makes it a joy to look at.
  • Suburban Glamour #3– I still haven’t read the second issue. I’ll make up for that next weekend.
  • New Avengers Annual #2– I’ve been looking forward to this but c’mon, Bendis, do you really need to take out all of your frustrations on Tigra? What’s she ever done to you?
  • New Avengers Illuminati HC– Sold the individual issues on Ebay to get this collection. Altogether I’ve enjoyed what Bendis has done with The Avengers even if it isn’t necessarily “my” Avengers.
  • Black Summer #5 Reg Cvr– One more issue after this one, right? I’ve been enjoying this title but it’s gone on a bit long.
