2008 has been off to a slow start but thanks to a number of collections, this week could end up being a huge week.
- Legion Of Super-Heroes Vol 5 #38– Shooter & Manupul’s second issue. Manupul’s artwork added some zing to Shooter’s rather standard script on the first issue. Shooter, while he doesn’t have that big of a body of work, has always been a solid plotter and scripter so I think eventually this title will take off. Hopefully it’s sooner than later.
- Astonishing X-Men Vol 3 #24 Solo Character Variant Cover— The penultimate chapter of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s arc. I can’t say that anything they’ve done has blown me away but this has been the X title that I’ve kept on reading all this time so I guess it can’t be that bad. When the two of them are on, this has been a great title but too many of the issues have felt like filler.
- Annihilation Conquest Book 1 HC– This has been an event I’ve had to continually fight not getting the single issues of. I really enjoyed the first Annihilation event and have picked up a few issues of this second event– the first one shot and the fourth issue off a couple of the minis. I’ve always been a big fan of Marvel’s cosmic stories and Annihilation has been an interesting re-imagining of the cosmos for the 21st century.
- Left On Mission TP– If there’s one series I wish I had spent more time talking or writing about, it’s Left On Mission, the Boom Studios! miniseries that now gets collected. Chip Mosher’s story of a former spy brought back into the game to find his ex-partner/ex-lover is a tight and well told story. Francesco Francavilla’s naturalistic artwork nicely compliments the story. This was one of the strongest and most original releases out of Boom Studios! last year.
- Complete Terry & The Pirates Vol 2 HC– I already have this in my Amazon shopping cart and need to finalize the order at some point. From what I’ve seen, I like the artist that Caniff developed into during the 1950’s more but the story in Terry & The Pirates is more adventurous and fun.
- Comics Now #1– Does the world need another comic book magazine? I’ll be checking out this one because a number of friends have worked on it and I’m curious to see what they’ve put together.
