Coming in February…

By Scott Cederlund in Previews, comics

One of the reasons I love using DCBS is that I have all month to actually do my monthly orders. For instance, the December orders aren’t due until tomorrow. Here’s what I should be receiving in February or anytime after that.

  • Brave and the Bold #10– Jerry Ordway fills in. If he became the regular artist after Perez left, I could see sticking around for this book. The recent Flash/Doom Patrol issue was a lot of fun and showed off the versatility of both the book and of writer Mark Waid. I don’t know if Waid is ever going to write a “masterpiece,” but he usually turns in solid and entertaining stories.
  • JSA V2: Thy Kingdom Come HC– I’ve been enjoying this series a bit more with this storyline even if the last issue was kind of monotonous. While I can’t quite put my finger on it, I wish that Johns would get back to the tone he had for JSA circa issues #21-60 or so, before JSA really got involved in Infinite Crisis and the rest of the DCU. Those were solid super-hero comics. Now, it feels like JSA is trying to be something more than that and I don’t know if Johns is the writer who can pull that off.
  • Tiny Titans #1– I love the preview of this and it was only $0.56 on DCBS.
  • True Stories Swear to God Archives TP V1– Image had two great archives this month, this one and Essential Hembeck but I went with Tom Beland’s book mostly due to how much Derek at Comic Book Noise has raved about this book this past year. I know he fell in love with this title and has talked about it quite a bit. I’ve been looking for a reason to pick it up and this seems like the perfect excuse.
  • Order V1 TP Next Right Thing– Rumors have been going around that Matt Fraction and Barry Kitson’s The Order is already canceled with issue #10 but I haven’t seen anything to confirm that yet. I picked up the first two issues of this over this past weekend to try it out and while I’m not as blown away by it as I am with Fraction’s Casanova, it’s decent. But I feel that I’ve already seen this in Peter Milligan and Michael Allred’s X-Force/X-Statix.
  • Yotsuba&! V6– Some of the charm on this series has worn off but it’s still a highly enjoyable series about the small joys of life.
  • Education of Hopey Glass– I plan on 2008 being my education on Gilbert Hernandez. I’ve got the big Locas hardcover that I really need to dive into but I know a lot of people prefer Gilbert over Jaime.
  • Comics Journal #288– Their big year-end issue. I may not agree with everything that TCJ prints but they still have some of the best writing about comics books.
  • Jumper Jumpscars TP– I only know two things about this book and only one of them is what has convinced me to buy it– it’s a prequel to a Samuel Jackson movie and it’s drawn by Brian Hurtt. Hurtt’s one of those guys I wish would get to draw more stuff.
  • East Coast Rising V2 GN– It’s always a treat to get more Becky Cloonan.
  • Comics Now #2– A new comics magazine more focused on newer comics– kind of a Back Issue but focused on recent stuff. At least, that’s what they tell me. It would have been nice to see the first issue. Of course, I’ve got some friends who’ve written for this magazine so I’ll check it out.

That’s not to say that I’m not ordering from the LCS anymore. Here’s what I’m adding to my regular weekly pull list…

  • Rasl– Jeff Smith doing sci-fi. Could 2008 be a relighting of the self-publishing flame with Jeff Smith, Terry Moore and Dave Sim all having new books coming out this year?
  • Zorro– I was interested because of Matt Wagner’s involvment but after seeing more artwork from Francesco Frankavilla, I can’t wait to see this book. It should be visually stunning and just right for this character.
  • Immortal Iron Fist: Orson Randall– Matt Fraction-written one shot based on the Iron Fist before Danny Rand. I loved the annual that focused on Orson Randall so this should be pretty good.
  • Umbrella Academy– Added it to the pull list for the last couple of issues. Have I said this is good stuff before?
  • 24: Cold Warriors– Steve Bryant’s preliminary artwork looks stunning.
