A Heroes comeback just in time for a writers’ strike?

By Scott Cederlund in television

Hiro returns to the present after making a major enemy.

Adam?

We start to find out where Peter was before Ireland.

Parkman faces his fears.

Crazy Nikki returns (sort of.)

Last night’s episode of Heroes, Out of Time, was a step in the right direction after the floundering beginning to the second season. This episode felt more like the show I enjoyed last year, with heroes learning to be Heroes while all the world conspires against them even while nothing is as it appears. And the big bad (to borrow a Buffyism) is revealed only to find out that he’s been here all along.

Since this season is going to be divided into two mini-seasons, we’re moving into the last 4 episodes of this story. Out of Time worked because it essentially abandoned all the new secondary characters that the show has tried to make important (I still don’t care about the brother and sister beyond their journey with Sylar) and focussed more on bringing everyone together. I’ve missed the simple friendship of Hiro and Ando that was infectious. Getting those two back together comes about 2-3 weeks later than it should have. I can now see where Hiro’s story was going but keeping these buddies apart so long was a mistake.

Getting Parkman, Nikki, Nathan, Mohinder and even Bob together was also an important moment. Season 1 built up to a grand teamup to battle Sylar and then… Season 2 opened up with most of the heroes scattered around the country, trying to create a new life again. Some were working together but most had no contact with any of the others. Getting a group of them together again gets us almost back to where last season ended.
