Weekly Shopping List– 10/10/07

By Scott Cederlund in Previews, comics

Before I take off for a few days, let’s take a look at what’s coming out this week. The weird thing is that I don’t even know when I’m going to be hitting a comic shop to get anything new.

Before we talk about what I’m buying, let me take a moment to say that I bought Phoenix V1, Buddha V1 and Sharknife v1 off of Amazon today.

Absolute Sandman V2: Don’t let me down Amazon. This better show up soon. This contains Seasons of Mist, probably the single greatest Sandman story that kicks off with Sandman #20 (possibly #21) featuring the full Endless family. I think when I finally have this volume in my grubby hands that I’ll begin reading the whole series.

Green Lantern #21: My interest is really waning on this series and I can’t tell why. I enjoy it and think that Ivan Reiss’s artwork is incredible but I may finally make the complete switch to collections on this once the Sinestro Corp storyline is over.

Justice V3: What can I say, I find Alex Ross’s painting fascinating. There’s something so solidly traditional and unflinching in his belief of superheroes that comes through in his artwork.

Suicide Squad #2: While I like Ostrander, I’m now realizing that I was never a huge fan of his Suicide Squad work. I’m pretty sure I read #1 but I’m at a loss to try and say anything about what it was about. I think I’ve got #3 ordered but I doubt I’ll go beyond that.

Fallen Son Death of Captain America HC: I don’t think I ordered this but I’ll probably pick it up. The collection of mainstream Marvel artists is solid enough that I think I’ll enjoy it.

New Avengers #34: Another book that’s quickly careening toward the “wait for the trade” pile where The Mighty Avengers is already waiting its sister book. I may end up sticking around until the end of Lenil Yu’s run on art but Bendis and Marvel really need to take a look at the pacing of this book which has been off since around issue #7. This may be a post for next week but Bendis’s structure and pacing for this book really kind of sucks. For the longest time, I was writing that off as he was waiting for Civil War but there’s no way I’m going to give him the same type of leeway as we wait Secret Invasion.

Powers V10: How long ago did I order this? A quick look at DCBS lists this as a September 06 book. I think at this point, I’ll just wait for V11 and read them all together.

Yotsuba&! V5: I’ve got the original Japanese volume of this book. The storytelling is so wonderful and clear that I don’t need to be able to read it to get the story.

Black Summer #3: I wonder if I’ve outgrown Warren Ellis? I think I’ve finally gotten to the point where he’s just worn me out. I can’t deny that this book is good because it is but I almost just don’t care what happens anymore. I want to read the last issue of Planetary but I look forward to his Astonishing X-Men run with an equal mix of excitement and trepidation. I think that I just want Ellis to grow up a bit, is that too much to ask?

Town Boy TP: This isn’t supposed to be as good as Lat’s first collection Kampung Boy but I don’t care. I look forward to reading this book at some point in the near future.

Essex Country V2 Ghost Stories TP: Another book that I know I won’t get a chance to read until next week. Lemire’s first volume as an oddly sentimental book about growing up that I can’t wait to see what he does with this volume.

Will Eisner’s Life, In Pictures HC: Thanks to some weirdness, I got this book last week to round out the trio of large Eisner collections. I don’t know why more people haven’t been talking about these collections of some of the most important and influential cartooning of the last 30 years. Not everything that Eisner did is maybe worthy of the praise that he gets but he helped define and develop the modern graphic novel in the work presented in these collections.
