Is it September already?
Comics aren’t due until Thursday this week because of the Labor Day holiday this week. Luckily there’s only one huge (i.e. expensive) book this week that I pre-ordered through Amazon so who knows when it’ll show up.
It’s also my first non-Countdown week. It almost feels weird not planning on buying a weekly series this week.
Checkmate V2 TP Pawn Breaks– This is one of those weirdly low key series that should be the backbone of the DC Universe. I’ve really dug this series so far as Rucka knows how to infuse the world of espionage into a universe that’s full of bright costumes and capes.
DMZ V3 Public Works TP– I’ve been looking forward to reading more of Brian Wood’s DMZ series. The second volume solidified the world/city that Matty is now a part of.
Jack Kirby’s Fourth World Omnibus V2– Amazon is telling me shipping on this is 4-6 weeks away. Stupid Amazon trying to keep me away from this Kirby goodness.
Wolverine #57– The Blade team takes over and I’ll be picking up this issue based on that and the previous issue of Wolvie written by Jason Aaron. Chaykin’s art chops are starting to really kick in again but I did miss the evocative lettering of Jon Workman or Ken Bruzenak. Issue 56′s lettering was too generic.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer #6– I’ve read the first few pages of this and it should more than make up for #5′s backfire. Brian K. Vaughan begins his story about Faith, one of Joss Whedon’s cooler creations.
Doktor Sleepless #2-I liked this better when Ellis called it Angel Future Stomp. We’ll see what this issue does for the series.
That’s all for what I’m buying this week but here are a handful of other books that look interesting:
Batman Gothic TP– I’m surprised that DC has allowed this Grant Morrison penned story to stay out of print this long.
Sword of the Atom TP– this contains some of the first Gil Kane artwork that I can remember really liking.
Amazing Spider-Man #544– One More Day begins and already I don’t care.
Captain America The Chosen #1– For a character that’s allegedly dead, he sure gets around.
Iron Man Enter the Mandarin #1– This series has the biggest chance of going home with me this week. Eric Canetes’ artwork looks simply amazing, mixing Dave Stevens and art deco.
Lobster Johnson The Iron Prometheus #1– Mignola’s Lobster Johnson finally gets his own series.
Phoenix V11– I can’t believe that I can’t find any volume of this at any of the Borders or Barnes & Nobles that I hit.
