Forget comics this week, the biggest release has to be season 1 of Heroes.
NBC’s surprise hit series isn’t the most revolutionary story or ground breaking television but it is a lot of fun, using a lot of standard superhero cliches but bringing a fascinating new life to them. Just the storyarc of Mr. Bennett is worth the price of admission– starting out as the obvious badguy and turning into the conflicted hero before becoming a hero in his own right. Add in Christopher Eccleston, Malcolm McDowell and even Eric Roberts and the cast got a lot stronger as the season went on. Speaking of which, DC finally has info out on the Heroes HC and a release date, October 24, 2007.
But you didn’t come here to talk about DVDs or TV shows.
Batman & Son HC– I’m looking forward to finally reading all of Morrison’s run. I’ve only read the first four issues but I’ve heard fun things about #666. Whichever Kubert brother is on the art doesn’t do that much for me. I wonder how excellent these books could have been if J.H. Williams III had been on this title from the beginning.
Countdown #35– my last issue finally. In the next week or two, I’ll probably have my own thoughts about this series up.
Teen Titans #50– Even though I dropped this title a while ago, it’s got a sequence created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. That’s enough for me because I really lost interest in this version of the Titans after McKone left.
Hellboy Darkness Calls #5– Hellboy is the one title that I’m really behind on. I’ve bought all th issues of this and the last mini but for some reason, I have the worst time reading them. Pretty art though.
Enigma Cipher #2– From Boom Studios, it’s been forever and a day since the first issue of this series came out, about the mystery of Nazi secret codes. I love the naturalistic artists that Boom has, like Greg Scott who did this series.
Local #10– Where in the world is Megan this issue? Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly’s mini has been an interesting exercise in following this characters life over 12 years.
Wasteland #11– Antony Johnsons and Christopher Mitten’s post-apocalyptic story continues. It’s been one of the most inventive titles lately.
That’s really it for this week but here’s a couple of other things that look interesting.
Action Comics #855– The first Eric Powell issue. Somehow, DC has gotten out 3 issues of this title in August.
Countdown to Adventure #1– the deluge of Countdown series begins.
Mice Templar #1– one of two issues about Templars and the second comic in two weeks focusing on mice. I didn’t plan to get this one but may pick up the first issue.
Last Fantastic Four Story– JR Jr artwork. I’ll need to flip through this though Stan Lee’s writing doesn’t thrill me.
Looking Glass Wars Hatter M HC– I’ve heard a lot of good things about this series.
Punks The Summer Comics Special– If my shop has this, I’ll probably pick it up. I’ve enjoyed Fialkov’s writing and Kody Chamberlain is a good artist.
