How are they going to do this? Really, how?
Earlier this year, there was an interesting discussion on the Comic Geek Speak message boards that took place between new readers of Watchmen and those of us who read it when it was originally coming out. The question was about how relevant and important the book really was with some people who had just read the book feeling that there was nothing new and revolutionary about the book. Of course, they were reading it years later when all of the tricks, methods and themes had become commonplace as opposed to new.
Much of Alan Moore’s 80s writing revolves around the cold war, with an us versus them mentality toward the Soviets. Now the threat of the Soviets means nothing to the generations coming of age now. Look how the movie of V For Vendetta was rewritten to reflect our current wars and fears rather than the mutually assured destruction of the period it was written in. The synopsis on the official movie site does describe the movie as taking place in an “alternate 1985″ so maybe they’re not going to re-write that part of the story. But without adding to the story, can it connect with a mass audience in 2008?
More on this probably later.
Check out the official movie website and note that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon’s names aren’t mentioned anywhere on the site.
