It sounds like a similar deal that John Cassaday has with Dynamite’s Lone Ranger book as Newsarama reports that Matt Wagner has been hired to write and oversee a Zorro comic from the same company. Click on the Newsarama link for a short interview with Wagner about this.
If this is true (and there’s no reason to doubt it right now,) I could be pretty excited. Wagner is a great writer. Check out Grendel or Sandman Mystery Theater to see how this cartoonist writes for other artists. I know I could easily handle a regular dose of Wagner on a monthly basis.
Licensed property is becoming an interesting field in comics right now. The success of Conan and The Lone Ranger easily opens the door for many of these classic characters to appear in comics again. How long has Dark Horse had the Star Wars franchise? That line may get quiet from time to time but it’s been around for 15 or so years since Dark Horse acquired the rights back in the early nineties.
Hopefully Wagner will stay on as the writer past the first 6 issues or take on a co-writer role similar to what he had on Sandman Mystery Theater.
