I love Spider-Man loves Mary Jane

By Scott Cederlund in comics

Just as I was wondering the relevance nowadays of Rich Johnson’s Lying In The Gutters, I catch this in his latest column:

Even though both Tom Beland and Jamie Rich are being considered to take over “Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane,” it may well be that the title is cancelled before a decision is made.

I know Matt loves it and I’ve really gotten to like it as well. It’s definitely the most charming book Marvel publishes right now and may just end up being the most heart-felt and best book in their stable right now. Part of the charm was the chemistry between Sean McKeever and Takeshi Miyazawa. The few issues in the first 15 issues without Miyazawa’s artwork don’t feel right. Since I’m getting this in the collected format, I haven’t seen David Hahn’s artwork that much but he looks like a worthy successor to Miyazawa on this book.

Tom Beland has become on of Derek Coward’s favorites lately and one of these days I’ll get to checking out True Love Stories. I’m not the biggest Jamie Rich fan but he has the right sensibility for this book. Both writers seem to have a good touch with these types of romance stories.

I’d love to see Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane continue in some form. I wonder how the digests have been doing? These seem perfect for a manga-loving crowd.
