Tales From Ebay– identification theft

June 3rd, 2007 -- by Scott Cederlund --> · 1 Comment

So, before heading out to mow the lawn, I thought I’d check out my email and see if Brad & Ty are coming over to record a podcast tonight and I saw a couple of cryptic emails from Ebay (do I really need to include a link to Ebay? I think not.) Now, I’m used to all of the spamming and phishing messages but these actually looked real. Apparently someone was using my account to sell their Honda Shadow (a motorcycle?) and Ebay flagged it and suspended my account.

Now, I haven’t used my account in a couple of months although I was planning to sometime this week and sell some stuff. After a rather nice on-line chat with Doyle, an on-line customer service rep I guess, I’m back up and running on Ebay but it’s weird to think that my account was hacked and taken over by someone else. It’s probably the closest that I’ve gotten yet to identity theft. Luckily nothing was done to my paypal account.

So, if you think I owe you a Honda Shadow or something else, I guess you’re out of luck.

    I have ebay stories to share too Scott. I don’t mess with ebay much anymore. Last year though, I sold 3 authentic Bulls jerseys to a guy in Hong Kong, and about 4 months later I get a phone call saying that I owe some guy $150 bucks. He reported that someone used his account to buy stuff off ebay. I told them unless I get the product back then he isn’t getting the money back. Then a few weeks later someone claimed that I sold them an Xbox 360 for $300 dollars, which they never received. And then to top it all off, I did have an Xbox 360 for sale which needed to be repaired, and a guy who claimed to be a busy doctor wanted me to ship it to his son who attended college in Africa! I’ve bought and sold many things on ebay, and luckily I have never paid for something that I didn’t receive, although I know what to look for and avoid. Some people on ebay are good though. They send emails to you that look really official. Other people who sell stuff have fake feedback somehow. So to everyone who reads this, be careful! Ebay is a great idea but just like many other great ideas there are always people out there that will ruin it by taking advantage of people.
